This kit allows you to build a trivet for hot pots or hot dishes with your favorite wine corks. The kit comes complete with hardwood frame with bottom tray, felt protectors, hanging hook (with screws), glue, sandpaper and instructions. The trivet can also be used as a bulletin board (using the hanging hook). This item does not include corks, and is meant to be filled with corks from your wine collection over time. You can also purchase new, unused corks from most liquor and wine stores. 10.37" x 11"

| For what it is this item is woefully overpriced and oddly enough, corks do not easily fit in it. The first I bought worked well, corks fit it seemlessly, the second had huge gaps. You would be better served building a box and just placing corks in it |

I had always wanted to make one of these, and decided to make one for my mother this year - a senior citizen who really doesn't want anymore stuff! I was very, very pleased with the quality of the frame, which was joined very nicely and had no flaws. Glue was included, as well as directions. You need 40 corks, and you should have more so that you have lots to choose from. Lay them out in advance to see what you like and FOLLOW the directions. It's easy - takes maybe 30 minutes from start to finish.
If you plan to use this as an actual trivet to hold a pot or something, forget it - it just doesn't let the corks sit high enough, and the pan will sit on the wood. However, you can use it as a decoration, and it comes with a hanger so that you can put it on the wall as a mini bulletin board.
If you buy wines that use the newer, artificial corks, don't worry - you should still be able to make this, and I KNOW you don't intend to put anything hot on those! However, they won't expand so much as corks do when you take them out of the bottle, so there may be more room on the board. In fact, even with my real corks, I found that they didn't fit overly tightly nearer the center. This did not affect the look at all. And my mother loved it! |
